The dominance of Chinese e-commerce platforms in European markets has raised serious safety concerns, according to recent investigations. According to European market surveillance authorities, a startling 85–95% of Shein, AliExpress, and Temu products do not adhere to EU safety standards, as reported by Ecommerce News.
The preference of Swedish consumers to shop internationally through Chinese e-commerce platforms became a significant change that attracted both consumers and industry experts in 2024. Asian retail giants continue to expand their market presence in Europe, which indicates possible long-term changes in the worldwide e-commerce environment.
According to the ECDB (E-commerce Data Base), the European e-commerce landscape is changing dramatically as Chinese platforms capture a larger portion of the market. As domestic e-commerce growth in China slows to just 3.5% in 2023—less than the growth of most of the top 10 global markets—Chinese giants are increasingly looking westward for expansion opportunities.
