AI Now Powers Over Half of Online Fraud. Croatian Merchants Launch Certification System

Artificial intelligence currently generates more than 50 percent of online fraud, and 99 percent of it remains undetected. The eCommerce Croatia association highlighted this problem and launched the Safe Shop certification system to verify the trustworthiness of online stores.

The seventh CRO Commerce conference took place on October 14 in Zagreb, with more than 600 professionals from e-commerce, digital marketing, logistics, and technology in attendance. The central theme was AI’s impact on online retail.

Online fraud will continue to grow – fake websites, phishing, hacked email accounts, and investment scams,” said Marcel Majsan, president of eCommerce Croatia. According to him, many customers only shop from large stores and prefer cash on delivery over card payments, which slows down the growth of the entire ecosystem.

Low trust slows purchases

Croatia has an add-to-cart rate half the global average, which, according to Majsan, signals a significant trust deficit. The Safe Shop system aims to address this problem through store certification and collection of verified customer reviews.

Automation changes the rules

Main sponsor Shipshape presented projects for brands including Pevex, Podravka, and Optika Anda.

Automation powered by AI defines the next chapter of digital commerce,” said Ernest Antolović, partner at the company.

Monri Payments, as a gold sponsor, presented payment technologies including digital wallets Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Click to Pay. The company also organised a panel discussion on collaboration between fintech and financial institutions.

DPD Croatia emphasised the importance of logistics for building trust. “More than 80 percent of Croatians shop online, and customers increasingly value convenience and flexibility over price,” said Dario Lučić from DPD. The company operates a network of 1,600 pickup locations in Croatia and 135,000 across Europe.

Education as a priority

Keynote speaker Ivan Bildi, founder of the Masterbox platform, urged merchants to start adopting AI now. “In a year or two, integration will be more complex and expectations higher,” he warned.

The conference was organised by the eCommerce Croatia association with support from partners including Lesnina, VIVnetworks, Boxnow, euShipments, and others.
