Amazon Faces Raids in Italy: Suspected Tax Fraud Worth Hundreds of Millions of Euros

Italian financial police raided two Amazon warehouses on Monday as part of an investigation into customs and tax fraud linked to Chinese goods imports, Reuters reports. Prosecutors claim the e-commerce giant functioned as a "Trojan horse" in bypassing VAT and customs duties payments, with potential damage reaching hundreds of millions of euros.

What’s Actually Happening

Guardia di Finanza, together with customs officials, seized approximately 5,000 products at Amazon’s logistics centre in Cividate al Piano in the Bergamo province. The investigation focuses on suspicions that Amazon enabled the import of Chinese goods to Italy without proper payment of mandatory taxes and fees.

According to court documents seen by Reuters, the company allegedly served as an intermediary for Chinese firms, allowing them to circumvent Italian and European customs and tax regulations.

The Problem May Extend Beyond Italy

Investigators suggest that a similar scheme could be operating in other EU countries as well. If the suspicions are confirmed, this could be a systematic issue affecting the entire European market.

For the e-commerce sector, this is significant news – questions around customs obligations and VAT on imports from China have been a sensitive topic for years. Smaller sellers often argue that large platforms have an advantage precisely due to ambiguities in this area.

What it Means For The Market

Amazon has not yet officially commented on the raid. The investigation is in its early stages, and conclusions are not yet known. However, for European e-commerce, this signals that regulators are taking the issue seriously and are prepared to act even against the biggest market players.
