Amazon’s Prime Day Shopping Event Breaks All Records

Originally commemorating Amazon's 20th anniversary, Amazon Prime Day started in 2015. It was offered in nine countries and ran initially for twenty-four hours. The event this year stretched across 24 nations and set sales records.

Prime Day started out as a 48-hour shopping marathon. New nations join every year, and the quantity of discounts and offers rises as well. For instance, in 2023 over 375 million things were sold and consumers saved more than $2.5 billion.

Not only are consumers searching for great offers excited about Prime Day, but small and medium-sized companies selling on Amazon also look forward it. For them, it presents a big chance to boost sales and product visibility. By 2022, their sales even exceeded those of Amazon.

It should be mentioned that the event is limited to premium Amazon Prime members exclusively. Benefits include free shipping on millions of products and quick logistics. Certain places offer same-day or two-day delivery. Additionally available to subscribers are Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, Prime Gaming, and Amazon Fresh. They also get access to unique offers and discounts, including Prime Day special deals.

Home goods, consumer electronics, and Amazon devices rank among the best-selling categories.

What was 2024 like

Prime Day 2024 broke through past performance. Having income of $14.2 billion, it increased by 11% over previous year. Purchase of mobile devices ($7 billion) accounted for over half of total, an 18.6% increase over previous year.

Comparatively to typical day sales in June, Prime Day electronics sales rose by 61%. Children’s clothes sales by 165% compared to June; school and office supply sales by 216%. One can ascribe this to the coming beginning of the school year. For this reason, Prime Day is perfect for showcasing these goods; so, businesses should give this some thought in their marketing plan.

Although major businesses like Walmart and Target started their own special deals and shopping events to draw consumers and rival with Prime Day, Amazon managed to capture market share from other stores during this month.

To meet part of the demand, Amazon gave earlier access to bargains even before the two-day event began. Data from Numerator show that, compared to $56.64 in 2023, the average spend per order for the first 32 hours of Prime Day was $60.03.
