This represents an important step for the digitalisation of the financial sector in the country, which has recorded significant growth in electronic payments and mobile wallet usage in recent years.
Apple Lays the Foundation – Banks are Preparing
Although Apple Pay is not yet officially active in Macedonia, technical preparations are in the final phase. The company has already informed relevant partners, including some of the leading banks, about the necessary prerequisites, security protocols, and integration methods into their systems.
“We are already working with Apple on final technical integration. We expect to finalize preparations in the coming weeks and offer full support for Apple Pay in the domestic market”, stated a representative of one of the banks actively working on implementation.
What Will Apple Pay Bring to Users?
Apple Pay enables fast, secure, and contactless payments through iPhone, Apple Watch, and other supported devices. Once a card is added to Apple Wallet, users will be able to make payments at any POS terminal that supports NFC technology without needing a physical card.
Each transaction is additionally protected by Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode, and card data is never stored on the device nor shared with merchants, which significantly increases the security level.
The Fintech Market Gets a Serious Upgrade
The entry of Apple Pay will represent a new impulse for the development of mobile payments in Macedonia, where more and more users are seeking digital and innovative solutions. Additionally, this will stimulate further competition among banks and fintech companies, which will strive to offer similar modern services.
September 2025 is shaping up as the month when this long-awaited service will finally be available to Macedonian users – making Macedonia part of the global family of countries offering Apple Pay as a standard for contactless and secure payments.
Although there is still no official information about which banks will first offer Apple Pay in Macedonia, it can be assumed that technically prepared institutions will be among the first. Some of them already offer similar digital payment solutions – such as Google Pay, Garmin Pay, Halk Pay, Fidesmo Pay, and proprietary mobile wallets. These include Stopanska Banka, ProCredit Bank, Halkbank, NLB Bank, and Komercijalna Banka, which actively work on developing contactless and mobile services, enabling users to have a modern and secure payment experience.
