Facebook Updates Live Video Storage Policy

Facebook has made major announcements regarding the way it will manage live videos on its network. A significant change will take effect today, on February 19, 2025: all new live broadcasts will only be accessible on the platform for 30 days following their broadcast. They will be automatically deleted from the company's servers at the end of this time.

Changes to Live Video Storage

Live videos are not the only ones impacted by this change. Facebook intends to gradually eliminate all live videos that are more than 30 days old. Users shouldn’t worry, though, as the business says it will alert everyone through email and the app itself.

❗Users will have 90 days from the time of notification to backup their content.

New Management Tools and Options

Facebook is launching new live video management tools to streamline the entire process. Users will be able to manage their videos in a number of ways.

  • Direct video downloads, either one at a time or in bulk, are the first choice.
  • Moving content to cloud storage is the second choice, and Facebook allows integration with well-known services like Dropbox and Google Drive.
  • The option to turn their live videos into reels—brief videos that will always be on their profile—is available to those who want to save the best parts of their shows.

Extended Deletion Timeline

Facebook provides a postponement option for users who require additional time to make decisions or verify their content. An extra six months can be added to the video deletion delay, giving you enough time to think about what to do next.

Understanding Facebook’s Decision

User behavior analysis, which demonstrates that the great majority of live video views take place in the initial weeks following transmission, is used by the company to support its decision. This is also an attempt to match content retention guidelines with social media industry norms.

Important Deadlines and Warnings

Users must make timely decisions about how to handle their archival videos and ensure they don’t miss Facebook’s notifications.

⚠️The videos will be permanently deleted and unrecoverable after the deadline has passed.

The modification is a reflection of Facebook’s changing approach to content management. This emphasizes the value of timely content preservation while preserving platform functionality.

Users have 90 days from the moment they receive the notification to take action, such as downloading, transferring, or converting their live videos to a more permanent format.
