First Step Towards Multilingual Reels: AI Translations Are Coming to Facebook and Instagram

Meta is expanding the AI translation feature for Reels on Facebook and Instagram. This is a tool that automatically dubs videos into foreign languages and adjusts lip movements to make it appear as though the creator is speaking directly in the translation. For marketers and e-commerce businesses, this could mean an easier path to international audiences without the need for dubbing.

The feature is launching with translations from English to Spanish and vice versa only, with additional languages to be added later. On Facebook, it can be used by creators with a page and at least 1,000 followers, whilst on Instagram, all public accounts can access it.

Besides AI translation, brands can also utilise their own dubbed tracks. Up to 20 language versions can be added to a single Reel, which companies can prepare themselves – for example, professionally recorded voiceovers. Users will then hear the language track that corresponds to their app settings. In practice, this means that instead of creating multiple videos in different languages, it’s sufficient to upload one video and attach multiple audio versions to it. This will be particularly appreciated by profiles that already work with professional translations or localisation.

Meta also offers viewership statistics by language, which can help creators and marketers evaluate which markets show the greatest interest in their content.

How to Utilise AI Dubbing

Currently, Meta only provides translations between English and Spanish, which limits the benefit for profiles in other markets. However, when expanding to other markets, the feature could prove useful.

AI dubbing and lip sync work best with simple videos where one person is speaking and there isn’t significant background noise. If e-commerce businesses work with product videos, tutorials, or reviews, they can use translation to open their content to new customer groups without having to produce separate language versions.

If you’re considering using this feature, it’s worth bearing in mind that automatic dubbing isn’t a guarantee of perfection. It’s not advisable to rely on it for communication where customer trust is crucial. In such cases, professional dubbing makes more sense, utilising the option to upload your own audio tracks and combine them with AI translations. This gives you greater control over the final result.

For now, we can view this feature more as an interesting experiment rather than a fully-fledged tool. Real benefits will only emerge when Meta makes more languages available and the quality of AI dubbing is proven in practice. Therefore, we recommend subscribing to the newsletter. 👇
