End of URL Shortener
Google has decided to completely shut down its long link shortening service – Google URL Shortener – by August 25, 2025. The goo.gl links will no longer be supported, and users will need to switch to alternative services.
Companies relying on goo.gl links will feel the change as early as August 23, 2024. An interstitial page will start appearing on these links, warning users about the impending shutdown. The frequency of these notifications will gradually increase until the final shutdown date.
After August 25, 2025, all goo.gl links will return a 404 error. This transition period is designed to help businesses track and modify affected links to ensure a smooth transition to new shorteners.
Google recommends: “If the interstitial page disrupts your use cases, you can suppress it by adding the query parameter ‘?si=1’ to existing goo.gl links.”
Non-Responsive Websites Lose Search Rankings
Have you noticed that you couldn’t find an older website that wasn’t optimized for mobile devices? Google is no longer indexing non-responsive pages. This means a loss of search visibility and traffic.
Given that most internet traffic now comes from mobile devices, ensuring smooth mobile operation is more important than ever.
This underscores the importance of mobile optimization, which has become a crucial factor in providing a quality user experience and maintaining search engine rankings.
John Mueller, Search Advocate at Google Switzerland, stated: “After July 5, 2024, we will only crawl and index these websites using the Googlebot Smartphone crawler. If your website’s content isn’t accessible at all on a mobile device, it will no longer be indexable. You may still see Googlebot Desktop in server logs and reports.”
Optimizing website speed is one of the important elements worth addressing in web development. Google provides several tools, including PageSpeed Insights and Google Search Console, which help identify and solve problems.
