Reels are now one of the most important formats on Instagram – they account for half the time spent in the app, and Meta is systematically shifting attention and algorithms toward them. To help creators utilize this space, Instagram is gradually expanding the Edits app with new features that speed up work and open more possibilities for creative content processing.
The main new features include:
- Overlay clips – video can be used as a top layer that you insert over another shot. This allows, for example, combining a product or character from the foreground with a different background to create a more striking visual effect.
- Advanced transition work – adjusting the speed of fade-in and fade-out effects allows for a more professional look of videos.
- Saved sound effects – users can save frequently used sounds or music they discover while browsing other videos.
Usage Possibilities
According to Meta data, up to 50% of time spent in the app consists of watching Reels. Year-over-year, video viewing on Instagram increased by 20%.
For e-shops and brands, this means an opportunity to:
- present products in a dynamic, visually appealing form,
- use trending sounds and effects to reach new segments,
- strengthen brand awareness and conversions through better audience engagement.
The algorithm gives more space to video content. Those who don’t create it may lose reach and interactions.
The Feature Ecosystem is Growing
Since April, numerous new features have been added to Edits – from AI style edits through teleprompter to analytics for Reels. It’s gradually becoming a full-featured editing tool that can replace standalone apps while remaining directly connected to Instagram.
Instagram clearly shows that the platform’s future lies in video. For marketers, it’s therefore crucial to give Reels systematic attention not only from a content perspective but also technical processing. The new tools in Edits will allow pushing video quality to a higher level and thereby increase the chance of organic reach and sales.
