Instagram Reaches 3 Billion Users

Instagram has reached 3 billion monthly active users, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri announced on his Instagram account. This milestone puts Meta firmly as the leader in social media, with Facebook, WhatsApp and now Instagram clearly leading in overall usage.

The Scale of 3 Billion Users

According to Social Media Today, the significance of this number is difficult to overstate. Three billion users equates to more than a third of all people in existence logging into the app each month. When factoring in that none of Meta’s apps are available in China, the world’s second-most populous nation, and many regions still lack internet access, Social Media Today notes that it’s likely more than half of all people who can access Instagram do so regularly.

App Reorganization Around Growth Drivers

In his Instagram announcement, Mosseri revealed that messaging, Reels, and recommendations have driven most of Instagram’s recent growth.

Based on this success, he stated that the company plans to reorganize the app around these three features over the next few months.

New Algorithm Customization Features

As Mosseri mentioned in his post, Instagram will soon start testing a feature that allows users to tune their algorithm by adding and removing topics based on their interests, starting with Reels. When users tap on the adjustment icon, they’ll see a listing of topics that the Reels algorithm thinks they like. Users will then be able to remove topics, add others, and exclude specific content they don’t want to see.

Reels will highlight the topics users like seeing with new tags in-stream. This feature aims to give users more direct input into their content experience. Few people may actually use it since most users are now accustomed to algorithms doing the work without manual intervention.

UI Changes for Easier Navigation

Social Media Today also reported that Instagram is testing UI changes to the lower bar icons, hoping to make it easier for users to switch between the Home feed, Reels and DMs from the main app screen.

Commitment to Creativity

Despite the platform’s evolution over the years, Mosseri emphasized in his announcement that Instagram wants to continue standing for creativity in everything they do. He expressed excitement about future developments and thanked users for being part of the journey.

What This Means for E-commerce

With 3 billion monthly active users – representing more than a third of all people on Earth who log into the app each month – Instagram remains a massive opportunity for e-commerce brands to reach consumers worldwide.
