Meta Wants To Turn Product Discovery Into Purchases

Meta has unveiled a series of new commerce tools designed to shorten the path from discovering a product to buying it. Announced ahead of Cannes Lions 2026, the updates include live shopping ads, expanded affiliate partnerships and a new checkout feature aimed at making purchases easier on Facebook and Instagram.

Live Shopping Is Getting A Bigger Push

One of the biggest updates is the expansion of Live Video Ads. The format is coming to Instagram and is also being rolled out globally across Facebook.

Businesses will be able to promote livestreams as ads, helping them reach audiences beyond their existing followers. On Facebook, shoppers will also be able to browse products, check prices and discover items directly within livestreams.

For e-commerce brands, this could make live commerce more attractive, especially for product launches, limited offers and creator-led campaigns.

Affiliate Commerce Expands Across More Markets

Meta is also growing its affiliate ecosystem.

The company announced new affiliate partnerships with Flipkart in India and expanded Mercado Libre integrations in Brazil and Mexico. Lazada is also being added for Facebook creators across Asia. Creators will be able to connect affiliate accounts directly to Facebook and Instagram and earn commissions from qualifying sales.

In addition, creators in 22 countries can now tag products directly from business catalogues or add affiliate links to Instagram content.

For brands, this means more opportunities to work with creators while keeping the shopping journey inside Meta’s platforms.

New Virtual Cards Aim To Reduce Checkout Friction

Meta is introducing Virtual Cards for Checkout on Facebook and Instagram later this summer.

Built in partnership with Mastercard and Visa, the feature generates temporary card numbers linked to a shopper’s existing payment account. Customers can complete purchases without sharing their actual card details with merchants.

The company hopes the added security will increase consumer confidence and reduce barriers at checkout.

Product Data Will Become More Important

Meta also revealed that product catalogue information such as pricing, availability, titles and descriptions will play a larger role across sales campaigns.

Instead of manually selecting ad formats, advertisers will increasingly rely on product data and creative assets while Meta automatically assembles the most relevant ad combinations for different users.

For e-commerce teams, maintaining accurate product feeds may become even more important as product information is used across a wider range of shopping experiences.

What E-commerce Businesses Should Watch

The announcements show Meta’s continued effort to keep more of the customer journey inside Facebook and Instagram.

The combination of live shopping, affiliate commerce, creator partnerships and simplified checkout could help brands reduce friction between product discovery and purchase. At the same time, it puts greater emphasis on high-quality product data and creator collaborations.

For European ecommerce businesses, the key takeaway is clear: social commerce is becoming more integrated, and Meta wants buying products to feel as natural as consuming content.
