Focus on AI-Powered Shopping
The Zurich hub will develop AI-based solutions that personalise users’ journeys on the platform. Pinterest will leverage its visual search technology to deliver relevant content recommendations.
The company is also focusing on AI tools for ad relevance and its proprietary “taste graph” system, which has seen usage grow by more than 75% over the past two years.
New Leadership from Google
Pinterest has recruited two experienced professionals from Google. Matthias Zenger, who worked at Google for over 20 years, becomes vice president of engineering. He most recently managed Google’s merchant shopping platform and infrastructure.
Mirjam Wattenhofer will serve as distinguished engineer, leading efforts to enhance Pinterest’s e-commerce technology and global user experience. She spent 18 years at Google as chief engineer.
Strong Financial Performance
The expansion follows successful Q2 2025 results. Pinterest reported 17% revenue growth to $998 million and an 11% increase in monthly active users to 578 million.
Generation Z now represents more than half of Pinterest’s user base, which CEO Bill Ready calls the company’s best product-market fit ever.
E-commerce Implications
The new AI center could significantly change how brands approach visual marketing and personalisation.
Pinterest positions itself as a “personalised shopping destination” with an AI-powered performance platform for advertisers.
The Zurich expansion signals Pinterest’s ambition to become a key player in the European e-commerce ecosystem through advanced AI technologies.
