The Future of E-commerce is Here: Perplexity Launches Shopping Capability

Artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing how we shop and sell. Its integration into the purchasing process brings a range of innovations that are transforming traditional approaches into more efficient, faster, and personalised experiences. This is evidenced by Perplexity – an AI-powered search engine expected to revolutionise shopping with its latest feature. With new functions that enhance customer convenience, it opens up new opportunities for both customers and e-commerce.

One of the key areas where AI plays a crucial role is product search. AI-powered tools can recognise customer needs and provide recommendations based on their preferences, purchase history, or market trends. This personalization enhances the likelihood of customers discovering the ideal product and minimizes their search time.

Amazon operates on this principle with its Rufus tool. Perplexity offers users with premium accounts in the US the ability to purchase products directly through their platform. The new Buy with Pro button allows customers to order using saved billing and delivery details, simplifying the entire purchase process without needing to leave the search engine.

All purchases made through Buy with Pro include free delivery, which further increases the attractiveness of this option.

Product Cards

These cards appear when searching for products and include product images, prices, and AI-generated summaries of key features and reviews. These updates make it easier to compare products and make informed purchasing decisions.

Snap to Shop

Pro subscribers can use this visual search tool to photograph a product and receive AI-generated information about it – similar to what we know from Google Lens. Pro users can still use visual search for purposes other than shopping, expanding their search capabilities.

Opportunities for Merchants

Additionally, Perplexity is introducing tools specifically designed for sellers. The merchant programme provides valuable insights into search and shopping trends that increase their products’ visibility. It also increases the likelihood that Perplexity recommends their products. This programme makes Perplexity an important partner for sellers looking to improve their visibility and sales.

How to Utilise Perplexity in E-commerce

These innovations represent a significant shift towards integrating artificial intelligence into the core of e-commerce. This can bring online sellers:

  • better visibility through the merchant programme, which can be a powerful tool for analysing trends and improving product placement,
  • improved customer experience through features such as free delivery and direct purchasing via Perplexity, which reduce barriers in the purchase process,
  • preparation for AI development, as monitoring and utilising new tools from Perplexity can provide a competitive advantage. Whether you’re a seller looking to optimise visibility or a customer who appreciates simple shopping, these improvements signal the future of AI-powered e-commerce.

E-shops should consider the merchant programme. It’s another way to stay ahead in e-commerce.

Interestingly, according to Perplexity spokesperson Sara Platnick, the company currently does not use the Buy with Pro feature for commercial purposes and receives no commission from purchases made through the platform.

This suggests that the main goal of the feature is to improve user experience and simplify the purchase process, rather than generate additional revenue for Perplexity. While there is currently no commercial element, this doesn’t rule out the possibility that Perplexity might consider partnerships with merchants or introduce other forms of monetisation in the future.

However, for the time being, this feature only serves as a user-oriented tool, simplifying online shopping without any additional commercial motivations.
