The feature processes translations directly on phones rather than sending data to WhatsApp servers.
Users pick which language to translate from and to, then download the language pack for future use.
Different Options by Phone Type
Android phones get six languages to start: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iPhone users can access more than 19 languages right away.
Android users also get an automatic option – they can turn on translation for entire conversations so all new messages come through translated.
Works Everywhere in the App
The translation works in personal chats, group messages, and Channel updates. Once users download a language pack, they can use it offline for future translations.
WhatsApp built the system so translations happen on individual devices. The company says it cannot see what gets translated since everything stays on the user’s phone.
Rolling Out Slowly
WhatsApp is adding the feature gradually rather than launching everywhere at once. More languages will come later. The company says it wants to help people “break down language barriers and connect more deeply.”
What This Means for E-commerce
Online businesses that sell internationally could use this to communicate directly with customers in different countries without hiring translators or multilingual staff.
