Currently, customers in the Republic of Ireland have to use Amazon’s UK site or sites in other EU countries such as Germany. The company said a dedicated Irish site means users will be able to avoid customs charges and currency conversion fees. The effect on Amazon customers in Northern Ireland is not yet clear.

Business opportunities

The store follows the launch of Amazon’s first fulfilment centre in Dublin in 2022, which is already delivering fast deliveries to customers across the country seven days a week. John Boumphrey, Amazon’s country manager for the UK and Ireland, promised that the speed of delivery would continue to improve.

“The launch of Amazon.ie will be great news for Irish customers and we’re looking forward to opening its virtual doors in 2025″ said John Boumphrey, Ireland & UK Country Manager at Amazon.

Irish enterprises

Over 1,000 Irish small and medium-sized enterprises already selling on Amazon, with reportedly generating over €150 million in export sales in 2022 alone. The new store will also be supported a five-year agreement that An Post and Amazon announced last year.

Amazon already has a rich history in Ireland, and employs around 6,500 people in Cork, Dublin, and Drogheda in a diverse range of roles including data engineers, operations management, and finance –supporting an additional 9,000 jobs in the wider Irish economy.

Amazon has invested more than €17 billion in Ireland since 2020, and Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) investment in cloud infrastructure has added nearly €11.4 billion to Ireland’s economic output by almost over the past decade.
