Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has unveiled improvements in affiliate marketing. These changes have two main objectives: to provide creators with better monetisation tools and to simplify shopping directly through social media. The feature is already operating in the USA, but we’ll have to wait for its implementation in our region.

How does the affiliate programme work on Meta platforms?

The principle of affiliate marketing is straightforward – content creators promote products and receive commission for each sale. The programme allows them to select products from partner catalogues and obtain unique links for tracking sales.

On Instagram, they can tag products directly in posts, Stories, or Reels, increasing their visibility. The system automatically tracks how many people purchase through the links and calculates the creator’s commission accordingly. Meta also provides clear statistics, enabling creators to see how their campaigns are performing.

The latest updates introduce the ability to insert affiliate links into various formats – whether Reels, photos, or text posts. The links are now more prominent and should attract more attention. Creators can customise link names and add discount codes, giving them greater freedom in reaching their audience.

The programme currently partners with major platforms including Amazon.com, Impact, Rakuten.com, Walmart.com, Sephora.com, Shopee.com, Temu.com, LTK, Shop Your Likes, and Magikly.

And now for the bad news: The feature of adding affiliate links to Facebook posts is currently available only to select creators in the United States. Meta often implements features gradually, so they may not be immediately available in all regions. This currently affects the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Although the feature isn’t yet available in our regions, it’s good to start thinking about how you’ll use it when it launches.

How to add an affiliate link on Facebook

  1. Create a post
  2. Add the affiliate link
  3. Label it as paid partnership if necessary
  4. Publish the content – the link will appear either in the video banner or in pinned comments

For e-commerce brands, this presents an interesting opportunity. They can collaborate more easily with influencers, better track campaign results, and increase sales through more prominent link placement.

To maximise affiliate marketing on Meta platforms, we recommend:

  • Offering attractive commissions and discount codes
  • Providing creators with necessary materials for quality product presentation
  • Regularly monitoring results and adjusting strategy

Of course, you’ll use these points once Meta launches its affiliate programme in our region. Until then, you can work on points that will pave the way to a successful affiliate programme:

  • Build good relationships with content creators
  • Prepare quality product materials for sharing
  • Monitor international trends in affiliate marketing (not only) on Meta platforms

Critical Points of the Affiliate Programme

In this case, success still depends on Facebook’s algorithm, which determines post reach. Optional labelling of paid partnerships may raise questions about transparency. Moreover, with the increasing number of affiliate posts, users may become tired of promotional content.

Meta’s new features are like a double-edged sword – they offer excellent opportunities for increasing reach but also bring greater competition in affiliate marketing. The key to success will be finding the right balance between leveraging opportunities and having a well-thought-out strategy.

Czech and Slovak brands should monitor the development of features on Meta platforms to fully utilise their potential when they become available in our region. Meanwhile, local brands can use their own affiliate programmes or collaborate through established platforms.
