Instagram Enhances DM Features

Instagram enhances DM (direct messaging) capabilities with several new features. The most significant additions include automatic message translation, scheduled messages, pinning important information in chats, QR code generation for group conversations, and enhanced music sharing. While the update is primarily designed for regular users, it has practical applications for e-commerce businesses using Instagram for customer communication, community building, and sales support.

Message Translation Simplifies Communication

This feature is particularly valuable for brands operating in international markets or targeting foreign customers. With automatic message translation, you can translate conversation texts without leaving the app. The translation option reduces language barriers and streamlines customer communication, making it easier to address product inquiries, delivery questions, or handle complaints.

Scheduled Messages on Instagram

Scheduled messages are designed to facilitate communication between users. “Now you can schedule text messages in DM – perfect for special occasions, like when you want to be the first to wish your friend ‘Happy Birthday!’ at exactly 12:01 without having to stay up late,” Meta states in their announcement.

The usefulness of this feature will be revealed over time. For e-commerce, the business applications are crucial, and fortunately, the platform allows scheduled message sending for business accounts. This enables sending regular updates about news, promotions, and other updates to customers without manual intervention.

When customers communicate with a business account, they can choose whether to receive regular messages on specific topics such as news, promotions, or updates.

Users can select message frequency (e.g., weekly) according to the schedule set by the business. To unsubscribe, they can simply mute or completely stop messages through chat settings. Importantly, businesses can send promotional announcements through this feature.

An advantage is that unsubscribing from a specific message category doesn’t prevent the business from sending messages on other or similar topics. If users want to stop all communication, they can block the business.

Note that scheduled messages will be sent in the business’s time zone, meaning users might sometimes receive one more message daily, weekly, or monthly than initially expected.

Pinned Messages Simplify Organization and Navigation in Conversations

Previously, Instagram allowed pinning up to three conversations at the top of the message list. Now, users can pin specific messages within chats, making navigation easier. Important information remains visible. This feature is particularly beneficial for businesses that need to keep important information readily available in customer conversations. In practice, pinned messages can contain FAQs, return instructions, important links, or exclusive offers, eliminating the need to repeatedly send the same information.

QR Codes Simplify Adding New Members to Group Chats

This feature is primarily designed to simplify adding new members to groups, which can be particularly useful for communities, interest groups, or events. However, its benefit for the e-commerce segment is limited.

While brands building VIP groups for customers, ambassadors, or influencers might find it useful, its practical value for sales and customer support is questionable. Most brands prefer direct channels like individual messages, email marketing, or chatbots that enable more personalized and efficient communication.

If an e-commerce brand’s goal isn’t to build a community around products, this feature likely won’t significantly impact sales or customer service.

Music Sharing as a Brand-Building Tool

Instagram has expanded music sharing in messages, now allowing users to send 30-second song previews. While this feature focuses on personal communication, it can also serve e-commerce, particularly in brand building.

Businesses working with musical context – such as fashion, fitness, or lifestyle – can use this feature to create atmosphere, strengthen branding, or increase engagement through recommended music.

Instagram Enhances DM Features: Impact on Business Growth

Instagram continues to expand its features to maintain attractiveness for both regular users and businesses using it for communication and sales. The new messaging tools remove barriers, simplify interaction, and offer brands more effective ways to reach customers.

Although these features aren’t directly sales-focused, proper tool utilization can help brands strengthen customer relationships, increase engagement rates, and ultimately contribute to better customer experience on Instagram.
