Shein’s Sustainability Claims Investigated

Shein's sustainability claims are under scrutiny as Italy's trade authority launches an investigation into Infinite Styles Services CO. Limited, the Dublin-based company managing Shein's Italian website. The probe primarily focuses on potentially misleading environmental assertions made on the platform.

The antitrust body says that the company seems to be giving the impression that it makes and sells clothes in a way that is good for the environment by making claims that aren’t clear or are possibly false.

The authority, investigating Shein’s Sustainability Claims, expressed concern over the “evoluSHEIN” clothing line, marketed as eco-friendly. The information provided could mislead consumers about the quantity of green fibres used. Moreover, there’s a lack of transparency regarding the garments’ inability to be recycled further.

The antitrust agency also pointed out problems with the way Shein said they were committed to reducing carbon emissions and the way their sustainability papers for 2022 and 2023 showed that they were actually increasing greenhouse gas emissions.

Shein is a fast-fashion brand known for its cheap clothes, but its labor practices and environmental effect are coming under more and more scrutiny. There are rumors that the company might go public in London, which has made these worries worse.

Shein’s spokesperson had not replied to requests for comment on the investigation at the time of the story.
